Freshers vs. experienced employees is a hot debate in the corporate world.
When bringing on new talent on board, it can often be confusing to choose between young and experienced candidates. Before comparing the two and discussing the advantages of hiring freshers and experienced candidates, we have to start from a common ground for both.
Both these candidates want to work and offer value to your company in one way or another.
With this hypothesis established, we cannot start considering the advantages and disadvantages of both fresh and experienced candidates.
We will first go through the positive and negative characteristics of young candidates.
The Young
There are many advantages of hiring freshers such as the ones given below.
New Ideas – they are more likely to come up with new ideas, helping your company find new inspiration.
Outsider Point of View – they provide a fresh view on current business processes and tactics and may share new ideas on improvement and optimization.
Risk Taker – they aren’t so conscious about making mistakes and are usually willing to try out new ideas and ways.
Inclined to Be Part of the Company’s Culture – since they are flexible and open to new ideas, they adapt to the company’s culture easily and also play a role in promoting the company’s philosophy.
Willing to Listen – they are open to all possible suggestions and willing to learn.
Low Salary – since their experience is limited, their salary demands are on the lower side.
Now let's review the negative aspects:
Likely to make Mistakes – they don’t have any experience, and so are more likely to make mistakes, to do something that will be a waste of time.
Unclear Targets – they may not be clear on their roles and responsibilities and will often seek your guidance or turn to you for further instructions.
No Idea of Time – figuring out the amount of time they would need for a certain task would be uncertain; this can affect your schedule baselines and delivery dates.
Demand More of Your Time – you would have to invest time and effort and would have to train and mentor them until they settle down in their new roles.
More Prone To Resigning – they are more likely to resign and give up if their expectations differ or they find something new and exciting.
